🪨 The Earliest Phase of Human Prehistory

The Palaeolithic Age, commonly called the Old Stone Age, represents the earliest phase of human cultural development in the Indian subcontinent. The term Palaeolithic comes from the Greek words palaios, meaning old, and lithos, meaning stone.

There are no written records from this period. Archaeologists therefore reconstruct Palaeolithic life mainly from stone tools, animal remains, geological deposits and traces of human occupation. These remains provide evidence of how early humans made tools, obtained food and adapted to different landscapes.

The Palaeolithic lasted for an enormous span of time. Its beginning and the boundaries between its phases were not identical everywhere. Archaeologists therefore divide it broadly on the basis of technological change into the Lower, Middle and Upper Palaeolithic.

⛏️ Stone Tools: The Most Important Evidence

Stone tools are among the most important archaeological remains of the Palaeolithic period. Early humans selected suitable stones and shaped them by striking one stone against another. Flakes could be removed to produce cutting, scraping or working edges.

The nature of these tools changed over time, and these technological differences help archaeologists classify Palaeolithic cultures.

  • Lower Palaeolithic: large tools such as handaxes and cleavers were important. Choppers and chopping tools also occurred in some traditions.
  • Middle Palaeolithic: flake-based tools became increasingly prominent, including scrapers and points.

Palaeolithic remains have been discovered in many parts of the Indian subcontinent. Their wide distribution demonstrates that prehistoric communities occupied a variety of landscapes rather than remaining confined to a single region.

The Soan or Sohan Valley in the north-western part of the subcontinent is associated with important early stone-tool traditions. Evidence has also been found in several river valleys of peninsular India, including areas connected with the Narmada, Godavari and Krishna river systems. The Belan Valley in present-day Uttar Pradesh is another important region for prehistoric archaeology.

Bhimbetka in present-day Madhya Pradesh is particularly significant. Its rock shelters preserve evidence of human activity over a very long period. Bhimbetka is also famous for rock paintings, but the paintings belong to different periods. Evidence of Palaeolithic occupation at the site does not mean that every painting there is Palaeolithic.

🌿 Hunting, Gathering and Everyday Life

Palaeolithic communities survived primarily through hunting and gathering. They depended on naturally available resources rather than agriculture. Wild plants, fruits, roots, seeds and animals supplied food according to local conditions and seasonal availability.

Access to water, animals, plant resources and suitable stone for making tools influenced where people lived. Rivers and other water sources were therefore important parts of the prehistoric landscape.

Palaeolithic groups were generally mobile because resources could vary with seasons and environmental conditions. Mobility, however, did not necessarily mean aimless wandering. Favourable locations could be visited repeatedly, and rock shelters, river terraces and open-air sites could serve as temporary or recurring places of occupation.

Agriculture, permanent farming villages and systematic food production were later developments. This distinction between food gathering and later food production is important for understanding the transition from Palaeolithic to later prehistoric societies.

🔥 Climate and Human Adaptation

Much of the Palaeolithic period was associated with the Pleistocene, an epoch marked by major climatic fluctuations. Changes in temperature, rainfall, vegetation and animal populations affected the availability of resources and influenced human settlement and movement.

Early humans had to adapt continuously to these environmental conditions. Their choice of raw materials, tools and occupation sites reflects this close relationship with the environment.

Fire became an important development in human prehistory because it could provide warmth and protection and assist in processing food. However, claims about the earliest controlled use of fire at particular Indian sites require secure archaeological evidence, so precise first-use dates should be treated cautiously.

🧠 Lower Palaeolithic

The Lower Palaeolithic was the earliest and longest of the three broad phases. Large stone tools are particularly associated with it. Handaxes were generally worked on both sides to create useful edges, while cleavers possessed a broad cutting edge.

Choppers and chopping tools formed another important technological tradition. The existence of different tool traditions demonstrates that Palaeolithic technology was not uniform across the entire subcontinent.

🔨 Middle Palaeolithic

During the Middle Palaeolithic, flake-based technology became increasingly prominent. Instead of relying mainly on large core tools, tool-makers produced flakes that could be shaped into smaller and more specialised implements.

Scrapers and points are important examples. This change indicates increasing control over stone-working techniques, although it should not be imagined as a sudden technological revolution occurring simultaneously everywhere.

🔪 Upper Palaeolithic

The Upper Palaeolithic is associated with the increased importance of blades and burins and other specialised stone-tool forms. A blade is generally a long and relatively narrow flake, while a burin has a working edge suited to particular tasks.

These developments formed part of a longer history of prehistoric technological innovation and preceded the widespread importance of microlithic technologies in the Mesolithic period.

🔍 How Archaeologists Reconstruct Palaeolithic History

Because Palaeolithic communities left no written documents, archaeology is the principal source for reconstructing their history. A stone tool becomes much more informative when archaeologists know where it was found, the geological layer in which it occurred and what other remains were associated with it.

Archaeologists study stratigraphy, geological deposits and appropriate scientific dating evidence to establish chronological relationships. Dating the remote prehistoric past can be complex, and new discoveries or improved methods may lead scholars to revise earlier chronologies.

For competitive examinations, it is therefore useful to understand the broad technological sequence rather than treating every prehistoric date as an absolutely fixed boundary.
