Rigvedic and Later Vedic society were two phases of the same broad tradition, but major changes occurred in geography, economy, political organization, social hierarchy and religion. Early Vedic society was more pastoral and kin-based, while Later Vedic society became more agricultural, territorial and socially stratified.
During the Later Vedic period, the centre of Vedic culture expanded eastward into the Ganga-Yamuna region. Agriculture, iron use, territorial political units, stronger kingship, elaborate sacrifices and clearer social differentiation became increasingly important.
Social differences existed in Rigvedic society, but the later rigid four-varna order was not fully developed from the beginning. The Purusha Sukta describes Brahmana, Rajanya/Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra, while these distinctions became more explicit during the Later Vedic period.
The Rigvedic period is reconstructed primarily from the Rigveda. Its world was centred largely in the northwestern subcontinent, with cattle pastoralism playing a major economic role alongside agriculture. Political organization revolved around kin groups, chiefs and assemblies.
Historians reconstruct the early Vedic world by combining the Rigveda, comparative linguistics, archaeology and increasingly ancient DNA. These sources support movements and cultural interaction across Central and South Asia, but no single source can identify a simple racial group called the 'Aryans'.
