The religion of the Indus Civilization cannot be reconstructed with certainty because its script remains undeciphered. Archaeologists therefore rely on seals, figurines, unusual structures, burials and symbolic motifs, but many older interpretations remain debated.
The Indus Civilization used a still-undeciphered writing system found mainly on seals, tablets, pottery and other small objects. Harappan seals combine short inscriptions with animal motifs and probably played roles in identity, administration and exchange.
The Rigvedic period is reconstructed primarily from the Rigveda. Its world was centred largely in the northwestern subcontinent, with cattle pastoralism playing a major economic role alongside agriculture. Political organization revolved around kin groups, chiefs and assemblies.
