☸️ Buddhism Did Not Remain a Single Institutional Form
After the Buddha's passing, Buddhist communities spread across different regions and developed distinct Vinaya, textual and doctrinal lineages.
Numerous early Buddhist schools emerged over the following centuries.
⚠️ Hinayana Is Not a Synonym for Theravada
Hinayana was a later polemical term used in some Mahayana literature for non-Mahayana paths or schools.
It was not the preferred self-designation of a major surviving Buddhist tradition. Theravada should therefore not simply be labelled Hinayana.
🌳 Early Buddhist Schools
Traditional sources speak of many early Buddhist schools, including Sthavira-related lineages, Mahasanghika, Sarvastivada and Dharmaguptaka communities.
The exact number and classification vary between sources.
🌴 Theravada
Theravada broadly means the Teaching of the Elders.
Its historical development became especially important in Sri Lanka and later mainland Southeast Asia.
📚 Pali Tipitaka
The Theravada canonical collection is the Pali Tipitaka, consisting of Vinaya, Sutta and Abhidhamma collections.
It is one of the most important surviving bodies of early Buddhist literature.
🧘 Arahant Ideal
Theravada strongly emphasises the arahant as a practitioner who has ended greed, hatred and delusion and attained liberation.
🌸 Mahayana
Mahayana means Great Vehicle.
It developed gradually through multiple textual, devotional and philosophical movements rather than appearing as a single sect created at one moment.
🧘 Bodhisattva Ideal
The Bodhisattva ideal became especially central in Mahayana. The Bodhisattva seeks complete Buddhahood for the welfare and liberation of sentient beings.
❤️ Bodhicitta
Bodhicitta is the aspiration to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all beings.
6️⃣ Six Paramitas
The six commonly listed perfections are generosity, ethical discipline, patience, energetic effort, meditation and wisdom.
📚 Mahayana Sutras
Important Mahayana textual traditions include the Prajnaparamita literature, Lotus Sutra, Vimalakirti Nirdesha, Avatamsaka and Pure Land sutras.
🧠 Shunyata
Shunyata, especially in Madhyamaka philosophy, means that phenomena lack independent, permanent and self-existing essence.
It should not be confused with the claim that nothing exists.
👤 Nagarjuna
Nagarjuna became one of the most influential Mahayana philosophers and is especially associated with Madhyamaka and the analysis of emptiness.
🧠 Yogacara
Yogacara became another major Mahayana philosophical tradition and is associated with thinkers such as Asanga and Vasubandhu.
🙏 Buddhas and Bodhisattvas
Mahayana traditions developed important devotional roles for figures such as Amitabha, Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri and Maitreya.
🧘 Chan and Zen
Chan developed in China and related lineages later became known as Zen in Japan.
🕉️ Vajrayana
Vajrayana largely developed within Mahayana philosophical and Bodhisattva frameworks while adding tantric ritual and contemplative methods.
🆚 Shared Foundations
Theravada and Mahayana both remain Buddhist traditions and share commitments to the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, karma, rebirth, ethical discipline, meditation and liberation.
🧘 Arahant and Bodhisattva
Textbooks often contrast the Theravada emphasis on the arahant with the Mahayana emphasis on the Bodhisattva.
This is useful as a shorthand but should not be treated as an absolute opposition.
⚠️ Kanishka Did Not Invent Mahayana
Mahayana emerged gradually over centuries. It was not created by Kanishka or by one single council.
📌 The Big Idea
Buddhist history cannot be reduced to a simple Hinayana-versus-Mahayana split. Numerous early Buddhist schools existed, Theravada survived as one major lineage, and Mahayana developed gradually through multiple textual, devotional and philosophical movements.
