Buddhist traditions remember a series of councils concerned with preserving the Buddha's teachings and monastic discipline. The First is associated with Rajagriha, the Second with Vaishali and the Theravada account of the Third with Pataliputra under Ashoka. The term Fourth Council refers to different events in different Buddhist traditions.
